Creditworthiness: What Lenders Assess Beyond Documents
Creditworthiness is a lender’s holistic assessment of the likelihood that a borrower will repay. It goes beyond documents to encompass character, capacity, capital, collateral, and conditions. These five dimensions are known in lending as the Five Cs of Credit.
| The Five Cs of Credit | What Lenders Assess |
| Character | Repayment history, reputation in the community, references from previous lenders or buyers. |
| Capacity | Ability to generate sufficient cash flow from the business to service the loan. |
| Capital | The owner’s own investment in the business. Skin in the game signals commitment. |
| Collateral | Assets pledged as security for the loan in the event of default. |
| Conditions | The broader economic and market conditions affecting the business and the purpose of the loan. |
